Hi, we're a team of 4 technologists and researchers at Cornell Tech, working with JustFix to see how we can technologically support low-income tenants and housing justice groups in securing speedy repairs for potentially hazardous housing issues. We've identified housing mold as a place we could potentially provide help, by creating a tool that catalogs signs that mold is actively growing from pictures of mold and water damage in someone's home, potentially with Computer Vision Artificial Intelligence. We're currently collecting an initial dataset and would appreciate any photos of mold and water damage you can provide, as well as any metadata about the photos. Anything helps!
NYCHA provides an online reporting tool for mold and other housing issues, and you can contact the Red Hook Justice Center for support. Our tool here can help you thoroughly document your issues before you report them, to save you time later in the process.
Please take and upload all photos of mold in a particular area of your housing (e.g. two adjacent walls with a long streak of mold, or several small areas of mold that look similar.)
Please also upload all photos of water damage or leaks in the same particular area of your housing (e.g. if the mold is in the kitchen, any visibly wet spots on the wall, under the sink, around water fixtures, broken caulking.) Documenting water damage is an important part of proving active mold growth, which may be necessary for a repair action from NYCHA.
Please repeat these steps 1 & 2, continuing to upload groups of photos for all relevant areas. (The same uploader below works for each step.) Thank you, and after you've documented your areas, we highly recommend you contact NYCHA and the Red Hook Community Justice Center.
